Israeli Steps Along the Road Map in Advance of June Summit
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Abu Mazen, and President George Bush are scheduled to attend a summit meeting on June 4, 2003, in Aqaba, Jordan, to discuss the road map. Prior to the meeting, Israel announced it was taking a number of measures to build confidence in the peace process and meet its obligations under the plan's first phase:
Israel released scores of Palestinian prisoners, including the oldest and longest-serving inmate.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon plans to evacuate 17 West Bank settlements.
The lifting of the general closure over the West Bank and Gaza
A daily increase of the number of workers entering Israel from Gaza: On Sunday, approximately 5,000 Palestinians workers left Gaza for work in Israel; on Monday, 10,000, and today (Tuesday) 11,000 Palestinian workers left Gaza for work in Israel.
The fishing area was increased to 10 miles of the shores of Gaza.
Public transportation in the West Bank was renewed, and now there are 8 public transportation lines operating.
The scope of transfer of goods between Israel and the West Bank and Gaza has increased.
