Congress & the Middle East: National Defense Authorization Act

(November 2015)

The NDAA for fiscal year 2016 provides authorization for appropriation of funds to various military and Department of Defense activities. Included in the NDAA for 2016 is the authority for the United States to establish anti-tunnel cooperation programs including maintenence and research and development programs to increase Israel's security. The legislation also specifies that, “not more than $41,400,000 may be provided to the Government of Israel to procure radars for the Iron Dome short-range rocket defense system... not more than $150,000,000 may be provided to the Government of Israel to procure the David’s Sling Weapon System... [and] not more than $15,000,000 may be provided to the Government of Israel for the Arrow 3 Upper Tier Interceptor Program.”

The bill was passed by the House and Senate on November 10, 2015, and was approved by President Obama later in the month. To read the NDAA for fiscal year 2016, please click here.
