Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act

(July 17, 2018)

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act on July 17, 2018. The legislation, which passed in a vote of 406 - 5, classifies the prevention of genocide and other similar attrocities as a national security issue and a moral responsibility. Republican Representatives Amash, Biggs, Jones, Massie and Sanford voted in opposition to the legislation. Per the bill, the President is to task the State Department with forming a Mass Atrocities Task Force to strengthen the agency's efforts and response to the threat of genocide around the globe. To view the full text of the bill, please click here.
