Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act on July 17, 2018. The legislation, which passed in a vote of 406 - 5, classifies the prevention of genocide and other similar attrocities as a national security issue and a moral responsibility. Republican Representatives Amash, Biggs, Jones, Massie and Sanford voted in opposition to the legislation. Per the bill, the President is to task the State Department with forming a Mass Atrocities Task Force to strengthen the agency's efforts and response to the threat of genocide around the globe.
