United Nations: UN General Assembly: U.S. Strategy and Objectives

(August 28, 1981)

Excerpts from a State Department cable from Elliot Abrams outlining U.S. concerns regarding upcoming UN meeting. Abrams reiterates support for Israel and wants warning conveyed against any effort to exclude Israel from the General Assembly. He also emphasizes the importance of supporting the Camp David agreements and preventing any effort to replace Security Council Resolution 242 with a new resolution calling for a Palestinian state. He also wants to head off any condemnation of Israel's raids on Iraq and Lebanon. Click here to read the document.
