UN Condemns Palestinian Hate Speech and Incitement

August 23, 2019

A panel of 18 independent experts submitted a report from the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) that contained unprecedented criticism from the world body of the Palestinian Authority. The panel found the PA had failed to implement UN treaties on racism, or to properly investigate complaints for acts of racial discrimination.

The committee reported the existence of hate speech “in certain media outlets, especially those controlled by Hamas, social media, public officials’ statements, and school curricula and textbooks, which fuels hatred and may incite violence, particularly hate speech against Israelis, which at times also fuels antisemitism.”

It called on the PA to combat “hate speech and incitement to violence” and to “remove any derogatory comments and images from school curricula and textbooks that perpetuate prejudices and hatred.”
