Auschwitz-Birkenau Photographs: Visual Evidence of Mass Murder

The 193-photo Auschwitz Album, taken in May or June 1944 either by Ernst Hofmann or by Bernhard Walter, two SS men whose task was to take ID photos and fingerprints of the inmates, is the only surviving visual evidence of the process of mass murder at Auschwitz-Birkenau other than four photos taken by a Sonderkommando.

Lilly Jacob-Zelmanovic Meier donated the album to Yad Vashem in 1980.

The album was likely not for propaganda and is assumed to have been prepared as official reference.
