The Wye River Memorandum: Israel Frees Another 151 Palestinians for Wye Accord

(October 15, 1999)

Israel released 151 Palestinian prisoners on October 15, 1999. Israel now has freed 350 prisoners since Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat signed the timetable for implementing the Wye agreement on September 4.

Israel said none of those freed had killed Israelis; however, 38 had murdered fellow Palestinian "collaborators." The released prisoners also included 41 Arabs from Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Sudan and Jordan. All 151 signed pledges of non-violence as a condition for their release.
