The Goldstone Report: UN General Assembly Endorses Report

(November 5, 2009)

By a vote of 114 to 18, with 44 abstentions, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the Human Rights Council panel led by Richard Goldstone that alleged there was evidence that both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes during the Gaza war from December 2008 to January 2009.

Three permanent members of the UN Security Council abstained - France, the United Kingdom and Russia - and the United States voted against the resolution that demands that the Israelis and Palestinians carry out investigations within three months. Supporters of the resolution said such serious accusations of war crimes deserved international attention and opponents found the resolution too broad.
