Memo Warning Truman Is Losing Jewish Support

(1948)

In 1948, President Truman faced a tough reelection battle that he was expected to lose. A famous Chicago Tribune headline prepared before the results were in said “Dewey Beats Truman” when Truman had prevailed. This undated (probably late September or early October 1948) memo from Trumanexpresses ’s friend Democratic National Committee Chairman William Boyle to the president’s executive secretary Matthew Connelly concern that Truman was losing support among Jews because of Secretary of State Marshall’s support for rolling back Israeli gains in its war of independence and the Bernadotte plan, which would have stripped the Negev from Israel.
