Hyères

HYÈRES, coastal town in the Var department, S.E. France. During the Middle Ages there was a Jewish community there which had grown to 300 persons by the mid-14th century. The poet *Isaac b. Abraham ha-Gorni was a native of Hyères. Jews from North Africa established a new community in the 1950s, which numbered 140 in 1968 and possessed a synagogue.
