Clifford Upset Marshall Approved Bernadotte Plan

UN Mediator Folke Bernadotte formulated a proposal for ending the 1948 War that would cede the Negev to the Arab state. Israel objected to the plan so President Truman’s political advisor Clark Clifford was upset to hear that Secretary of State Marshall, who opposed both partition and the recognition of Israel, had approved the plan without the president’s endorsement.
