CIA Assessment of Menachem Begin Following His Election

(July 7, 1977)

Following the election of Menachem Begin as prime minister of Israel, the CIA wrote a brief biography with an analysis of his views on economics and foreign policy. The report notes that he was considered a “hardliner” but since his election his image has changed to “that of a sober and thoughtful national leader, a man of integrity whose forthrightness could renew Israeli pride and refurbish the country’s image abroad.”
