Gavriel Reuben Warburg

WARBURG, GAVRIEL REUBEN (1927– ), Israeli Orientalist. Warburg, a grandson of Otto *Warburg, was born in Berlin, Germany, but immigrated with his parents to Palestine in 1934. From 1946 to 1964 he was a member of kibbutz Yeḥi'am. In 1968 he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Middle Eastern History of the University of Haifa, was chairman of the department from 1969 to 1972, senior research Fellow at the Research Institute on Communist Affairs and at the Middle East Institute at Columbia University in New York from 1972 to 1973, and in the latter year was appointed associate professor at Haifa. In 1974 he was appointed rector of the University. Warburg published The Sudan under Wingate (1971); The Rise and Decline of the Sudanese Communist Party (1974), Egypt and Sudan (1985), and Islam, Sectarianism and Politics in the Sudan Since the Mahdiyya (2003).
