Richard Stone

Richard Bernard Stone is a Jewish American politician and diplomat who served as a U.S. Senator from Florida and as an Ambassador at Large.

Stone (born September 22, 1928) was born in New York City and public school in Dade County, Florida. He graduated from Harvard University in 1949 and from Columbia University Law School in 1954. Stone was admitted to the Florida bar in 1955 and commenced practice in Miami.

In 1966, Stone served as city attorney of Miami and as a member of the Florida State Senate from 1967 to 1970. Stone served as Florida secretary of State from 1970 to 1974 before being elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1974. Stone served only one term and was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1980.

After serving in Congress, Stone was appointed Ambassador at Large and Special Envoy to Central America (1983-1984).

He is an attorney and banker and now lives in Washington, D.C. Stone was married to Marlene Lois Stone and had three children
