McCloy Tells Pehle Bombing Camps “Impracticable”

In 1944, War Refugee Board Director John W. Pehle made several direct appeals to the War Department for the bombing of concentration camps and rail lines. Others specifically asked that Auschwitz be bombed. Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy explains in this response that doing so would be “impracticable” and of “doubtful efficacy.”
