Grock

(1880-1959)

GROCK (Charles Adrien Wettach; 1880–1959), Swiss clown. Born at Moulin de Loveresse, the son of a Jewish father and non-Jewish mother, Grock was first attached to a traveling circus. He performed on the stage in England from 1911 to 1924, and afterward throughout Europe. He specialized as a musical clown, playing a tiny violin at a grand piano and getting into trouble with both. He built his act into the world's most famous comic display. His German autobiography appeared in English in 1957 as Grock, King of Clowns.
