Fathi Arafat

(1937 - 2004)

Fathi Arafat, the brother of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and founder of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, died in Cairo on December 1, 2004, at the age of 67.

Arafat was the director of the Palestine Hospital in suburban Cairo where he died of stomach cancer.

Three years earlier, Arafat quit his position as chairman of the Palestinian Red Crescent, the Muslim version of the Red Cross.

Arafat graduated from Cairo University in 1957 and spent several years working in Egypt, Kuwait and Jordan. He moved to the territories after the creation of the Palestinian Authority in 1994.

He was also a senior member of Fatah, the Palestinian Liberation Organization's political movement.

Arafat is survived by his wife, Nadia, and two grown children.
