Abner Mikva

Abner Joseph Mikva is a Jewish American politician and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mikva (born January 21, 1926) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He recieved his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1951. Mikva served two years as a navigator in United States Army Air Corps, from 1944 to 1945.
From 1951 to 1952, Mikva served as law clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Sherman Minton and from 1956 to 1966, he served in the State of Illinois Legislature.
In November 1968, Mikva was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives and was reelected once, in 1970. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1972.
After his congressional career, Mikva returned to Illinois and served on the Illinois State Board of Ethics in 1973 and practiced law in Chicago, from 1973 to 1974.
In November 1974, he was re-elected as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives and served until his resignation September 26, 1979. Following his second congressional stint, Mikva served as a judge in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit from 1979 to 1991.
