U.S. Proposes Establishing Mission In Tel Aviv

(June 15, 1948)

The month-old Israeli government had not yet decided to make Jerusalem its capital. The United States expected it to be in or near Tel Aviv as one of the suggestions had been Sarona, which is now a hip place in central Tel Aviv. When Jerusalem did become the capital, the United States refused to place its embassy there until President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moved the embassy from Tel Aviv.
