The Vatican & the Holocaust: Taylor Letter to Cardinal Maglione Describing Holocaust

(September 26, 1942)

In September 1942, Myron C. Taylor, President Roosevelt's personl representative to the Vatican, sent the following letter to Cardinal Secretary of State Luigi Maglione. Quoting from a report received from the Jewish Agency's Geneva office describing in great detail the murder of Jews in Warsaw, Slovakia and elsewhere, the letter asks for the Vatican's help in confirming the information and for the Pope's suggestions as to how to prevent the continuation of "these barbarities." Taylor subsequently encouraged the Pope to speak out against the atrocities.
