Sen. Myers Expresses Concern to Truman Over Trusteeship Proposal

(March 4, 1948)

As part of the State Department’s effort to scuttle partition, a proposal was floated at the UN to create a trusteeship for Palestine rather than a Jewish and Arab state. This appeared to be a dramatic reversal in U.S. policy and provoked outrage among the Zionists and their supporters. In this letter to President Truman, Senator Francis Myers (D-PA) expresses his dismay over the situation and Truman responds that he is willing to explain his position in person.
