OSS Reports on Zionist Campaign for a Jewish Army and Statehood

(April 19, 1943)

The OSS reports in this document on the intensification of efforts by Zionists to promote the creation of a Jewish army to fight the Germans. The report says the Haganah and Irgun are “illegal Zionist armed groups” that are engaged in terrorism against Jews who do not support “extreme political Zionism.” It is not clear who is being terrorized, but the Haganah was the recognized army of the Jewish community in Palestine. The Irgun were the renegades, though at times they cooperated with the Haganah. The document also refers to Zionist activities to gain support for a Jewish state.
