NSA Security Failure in Achille Lauro Hijacking
(October 7, 1985)
On October 7, 1985, National Security Agency learned from State Department sources that an Italian cruise ship – the Achille Lauro – sailing in the eastern Mediterranean had been hijacked. This redacted NSA document describes some of the events but is mainly concerned with the “security failure” created by the Reagan administration leaking to the press the cooperation of the NSA and Israel in “wiring” the area. This report does not mention the murder of a wheelchair-bound Jewish passenger from the United States named Leon Klinghoffer.
