Niles Informs Truman Arab Delegates At UN Were Hitler Allies
(May 12, 1947)
David Niles, one of President Truman’s closest advisers and an ardent supporter of the Zionist cause, wrote this memo revealing that the Mufti of Jerusalem and Arab representative at the UN were allies of Hitler. Truman’s response handwritten in the margin reflects his frustration with the Palestine issue, which he says could have been settled if “U.S. politics had been kept out of it.” He also seems to blame the parties themselves when he says he wishes God “would give the Children of Israel an Isaiah, the Christians a St. Paul and the Sons of Ishmeal [sic] a peep at the Golden Rule.”
