Ickes Rejects Renewal of Proposal to Allow Jews Into Virgin Islands

(January 13, 1943)

In October 1942, Secretary of Interior Harold Ickes suggested allowing Jewish refugees to enter the U.S. Virgin Islands, but the idea was opposed by the State Department. Rabbi Stephen Wise raised the idea again in 1943 and Ickes responded it was not an opportune time to renew the proposal.
