United Nations General Assembly Passes Israeli Resolution

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution introduced by Israel. This is the first time the General Assembly has ever passed a non-political resolution sponsored by the Jewish State. The draft resolution on the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa would call on UN member states to assist in the agricultural growth of developing nations in need of agricultural infrastructure and stability. The resolution ensures that bringing agricultural technology to nations in need will remain a top priority of the United Nations. The resolution stressed that Africa is the only continent currently on track to not meet any of the goals of the United Nations Millenium Declaration by 2015. This May, the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, of which Israel is a vice-chair, will meet. These issues are expected to be high on their agenda as well.

The measure passed the Second Committee on December 5th without a vote and was approved by the General Assembly on December 11th. 118 nations voted in favor of the resolution, none voted against and 29 nations abstained.
