UN Security Council Resolution 100 (October 1953)

On 1 September 1953, Israel began work on a hydro-electric project serving its water development in the Upper Jordan basin. On 23 September, the Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization asked the Government of Israel "to ensure that the authority which started work in the demilitarized zone on 2 September 1953 is instructed to cease working in the zone so long as an agreement is not arranged. " On 27 October 1953, the Security Council adopted the following Resolution asking Israel to suspend the work during the urgent examination of the question by the Council. Israel agreed to halt the works during that examination:

The Security Council,

Having taken note of the report of the Chief of Staff of the Truce Supervision Organization dated 23 October 1953 (S/3122),

Desirous of facilitating the consideration of the question, without, however, prejudicing the rights, claims or positions of the parties concerned,

Deems it desirable to that end that the works started in the demilitarized zone on 2 September 1953 should be suspended during the urgent examination of the question by the Security Council;

Notes with satisfaction the statement made by the Israel representative at the 631st meeting regarding the undertaking given by his Government to suspend the works in question during that examination;

Requests the Chief of Staff of the Truce Supervision Organization to inform it regarding the fulfilment of that undertaking.
