Peres, Arafat Sign Cairo Agreement
(February 9, 1994)
Five months after the signing of the Declaration of Principles (DOP), Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat met in Cairo to negotiate a first step toward a final agreement that would transfer civilian authority to the Palestinians in Gaza and Jericho. Israel was to retain control over security in both areas. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak served as a mediator, and after two days, a deal was reached. A more detailed agreement was reached on May 4, 1994. Click here to read the document.
