CIA Report on Palestine Before Partition

(October 20, 1947)

The CIA produced a report on the situation in Palestine prior to the UN vote on partition in which the Agency described the political, economic and military conditions. The British already had announced plans to withdraw and the Agency was unsure of the outcome of a partition vote at the UN despite support from the United States and the Soviet Union. Consistent with the Arabist view that prevailed in the State Department and CIA, the report warned that U.S. support for partition would threaten relations with the Arab states and oil supplies while increasing the chances of Soviet infiltration in the region.
