Mike Huckabee

(1955 - )

Mike Huckabee is an author and political commentator who served as the 44th Governor of Arkansas. Huckabee sought the Republican nomination for President during the 2016 elections, but suspended his campaign after faring badly during the Iowa caucus. He hosted the Fox News Channel show, Huckabee, from 2008 until January 2015, when he cancelled the show to explore the possibility of running for President. Huckabee identifies as a Christian-Zionist, and has visited Israel many times since he was a teenager.

Mike Huckabee was born in Hope, Arkansas, on August 24, 1955. He can trace his family's lineage back to the original 13 colonies, and he is of English ancestry. Huckabee was a star student in high school and was always involved with student government or class planning. The year after he graduated he married his high school sweetheart, Janet, and went on to complete his Bachelors degree in religion from Ouachita Baptist University in only five semesters.

Following his college graduation Huckabee took a job as a staffer for televangelist James Robinson, and later began a career as a Pastor at various churches around Arkansas. He hosted local access television stations in Pine Bluff and Texarkana Arkansas, and preached using a variety of mediums. Huckabee served as the president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention from 1989-1991, and ran his first real political campaign in 1992. He lost a Senatorial race to the incumbent Democrat, but during the same election Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton was elected to the Presidecy. The Lieutenant Governor stepped into Clinton’s place, and Huckabee was encouraged by friends and peers to run for the vacant Lieutenant Governor spot. He won in a special election after running a more conservative campaign, and was re-elected in 1994.

In 1996 Arkansas Governor Jim Tucker was convicted of fraud and forced to step down, as a convicted felon cannot legally hold office in Arkansas. Huckabee was sworn in as Governor on July 15, 1996, and was elected to subsequent 4-year terms in 1998 and 2002. During Huckabee’s governorship, Arkansas state debt increased by approximately $1 billion.

In January 2007 Huckabee announced on the television program Meet The Press that he would be seeking the Republican nomination for the presidency during the 2008 election. Despite winning the Iowa Caucus, enjoying widespread support from religious organizations, and having strong showings in primaries nationwide, Huckabee conceeded when it was clear that his competitor, John McCain, would win the Republican nomination. He did not attempt a presidential run against incumbent Barack Obama in 2012.

Mike Huckabee believes that we should be expanding the military and increasing military spending, and is opposed to all types of gun control regulations. As Governor of Arkansas Huckabee supported and passed legislation prohibiting same-sex marriage, supported the death penalty, and pushed for the teaching of intelligent design and the display of the ten commandments in public schools. During his Presidential campaign Huckabee released a 9-point immigration reform plan that includes increased border security, and would require all illegal immigrants to register with the U.S. government and then return to their home countries within 120 days. A staunch opponent of the Affordable Care Act, Huckabee is in favor of repealing the law.

Amid speculation that he would be seeking the nomination in 2016, Huckabee pulled his talk show off the air in January 2015. He announced that he would officially be seeking the Republican nomination for the presidency on May 5, 2015, in his hometown.

Huckabee suspended his campaign on February 1, 2016, the night of the Iowa caucus, after receiving only 1.8% of the vote.

On November 12, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump appointed Huckabee as U.S. Ambassador to Israel, signaling a likely shift in U.S. policy toward more robust support for Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank. Huckabee, a proponent of Greater Israel, has long opposed a two-state solution and has close ties with Israeli settlers and the Yesha Council. He has described Israel’s claim to the land as rooted in divine promises, asserting that Israel is “occupying the land God gave them 3,500 years ago” and rejecting boundaries set by international bodies, stating that “the boundaries of Israel are not given by the United Nations but by almighty God.” He has been a vocal critic of the Iran nuclear deal and U.S. policies on Iran and the Palestinians, advocating for West Bank annexation and an alternative Palestinian state outside Israel. His appointment, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s choice of Yechiel Leiter as Israel’s next ambassador to the U.S., points toward potential annexation efforts. The Republican Jewish Coalition and former U.S. Ambassador David Friedman praised Huckabee’s deep commitment to Israel. At the same time, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon extended congratulations.

Huckabee’s decades-long support for Israel includes over 100 visits since 1973 and active participation in settlement-building efforts, such as laying bricks in Efrat. He has dismissed Palestinian nationalism as a “political tool” and repeatedly claimed “there is no such thing as a West Bank,” referring instead to “Judea and Samaria.” Huckabee has also argued that relinquishing land endangers Israel’s security, equating Palestinian aspirations to threats posed by groups like ISIS. Following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks, he condemned Gaza’s militants as “barbarians” and reaffirmed evangelical solidarity with Israel. Huckabee has also advocated for U.S. adoption of Israeli approaches to security and gun control, and his hawkish stance on Iran aligns with the administration’s anticipated pro-Israel policy direction. Describing his connection to Israel as “visceral” and personal rather than merely political, Huckabee has emphasized that settlement expansion is central to ensuring Israeli security and sovereignty.

On December 2, 2024, after President-elect Trump condemned the ongoing captivity of hostages by Hamas and threatened severe consequences if they were not released by the time he assumed office, Huckabee praised the President-elect. He said that “there must be serious consequences for holding any hostage” but that America needs “to exact severe consequences for kidnapping and murdering American hostages.”

On March 23, 2025, Huckabee visited the Ohel, the resting place of “the Rebbe,” Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, in Queens, New York, before his confirmation hearings as the next U.S. ambassador to Israel. Accompanied by his wife Janet and escorted by leaders from the Israel Heritage Foundation and Chabad-Lubavitch, Huckabee prayed at the site and expressed strong support for Israel. His visit concluded with a reception in his honor hosted by the Israel Heritage Foundation.

Mike Huckabee’s nomination as U.S. ambassador to Israel has divided the American Jewish community. The Orthodox Union and Republican Jewish Coalition support him, citing his alignment with pro-Israel views and opposition to a two-state solution. At the same time, Christians United for Israel praises his Christian Zionist beliefs. In contrast, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, J Street, and the Jewish Democratic Council of America oppose his nomination, criticizing his past comments and arguing that his views undermine U.S. diplomatic interests. Rep. Jerry Nadler has also condemned Huckabee as unfit for the role, while AIPAC remains neutral. Huckabee has pledged to represent the administration’s policies rather than his views if confirmed.

During his Senate confirmation hearing to be U.S. ambassador to Israel, Huckabee expressed strong support for President Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, emphasizing economic pressure over military action. He criticized the Biden administration for relaxing sanctions, which he argued enabled Iran to fund terrorist groups targeting Israel. Huckabee insisted that peace between Israel and the Palestinians required a cultural shift within Palestinian society, particularly in education. He vowed to prioritize the release of American hostages held by Hamas and pledged to follow the president’s policies rather than advocate his views.

On April 9, 2025, the Senate confirmed Huckabee as President Trump’s ambassador to Israel. The upper chamber largely voted along party lines, with 53 in favor and 46 against. Notably, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) voted in favor of the nomination.

Later that month, after presenting his credentials to Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Huckabee strongly condemned Iran, accusing it of seeking the destruction of both Israel and the United States, describing Israel as “the appetizer” and America as “the entrée.” His remarks coincided with ongoing Trump administration talks with Iran to ease sanctions in return for nuclear restrictions, led by envoy Steve Witkoff. Herzog echoed concerns about Iran’s regional aggression and nuclear ambitions, praising Huckabee’s support for Israel and comparing him to the biblical Abraham. Huckabee, calling his appointment a divine calling, also met with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to discuss Iran and deepen U.S.-Israel ties.

  • “They’re quite aware what the Iranians are capable of, and so they take seriously the threats from the Iranians when they say they would wipe them off the face of the earth, and when they say ‘death to America,’ when an Iranian official said, and I quote, ‘we have developed missiles that will deliver the Holocaust to Israel’- I mean, those are the kind of statements that the Iranians have made that obviously they took very seriously.”

The same is true for countries.”
