Arab Movement for Change

by Rebecca Weiner

Formed in 1996 by Dr. Ahmed Tibi, the Arab Movement for Change (AMC) hoped to serve as a united party for all Arabs. AMC is controversial among Israelis since Tibi was in secret contact, on behalf of the Israeli peace movement, with the PLO, before the Oslo Accords were signed. Tibi also serves as principal advisor to Yasser Arafat. AMC became registered as a legitimate political party after seven attempts. The Arab Movement for changed dropped out right before the 1996 elections and instead formed a coalition with Hadash. AMC joined Balad for the 1999 elections, but split afterwards back into two parties, each with one seat.
