UK Taskforce Report on Understanding Jewish Experience in Higher Education
(May 2023)
A parliamentary Taskforce on Anti-Semitism in Higher Education established by the British Government’s Independent Adviser on Antisemitism, Lord Mann, found that it is “commonplace” for Jewish students not to wear “certain clothing or jewelry around campus because it would make them visibly identifiable as Jewish.” Students also said they were reluctant to attend seminars or lectures related to Israel “for fear of personal interrogation.” While they “generally have a positive university experience,” anti-Semitic incidents on campuses “relating to Zionism or Israel” have increased.
The taskforce said implementing and embedding the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism into all processes is “essential for building trust between Jewish students and staff and their institutions.”
