Shalom Simhon

(1956 - )

Shalom Simhon is an Israeli politician and former minister in the Israeli Cabinet.

Simhon was born in Israel in 1956. He holds a B.A. degree in Social Work. A resident of Moshav Even Menachem, he has held various public positions, among them: Secretary-General of the Moshavim Movement (1993); Chairman, Administrative Council of Tnuva (until 1996); Secretary, Young Guard of the Moshavim Movement; Member, Council of the Israel Land Administration; Chairman, Moshavim Pension Fund; Secretary-General of the Agricultural Center.

First elected to the Knesset in 1996, he served on the Knesset Finance Committee; Economics Committee; and the Committee for Foreign Workers. In the 15th Knesset (1999) he was Chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee.

Shalom Simhom served as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from March 2001 until October 2002, when he resigned from the government together with the other Labor ministers.

In January 2005 he was appointed Minister of the Environment.

Simhon served as Minister of the Environment from January to November 2005, when Labor resigned from the government. 

In May 2006, Shalom Simhon was appointed Minister of Agriculture, a position he held until 2011. In 2011, Simhon left the Labor Party to join the Independence Party and was elected to Knesset again. That year he was appointed Minister of Trade, Industry & Labor as well as Minister of Minorities. Simhon lost his Knesset seat in 2013 after Independence chose not to contest the elections.

He is married, with two children.
