Roosevelt Unwilling To Help Persecuted Christians In Germany
(November 13, 1936)
While much of the focus on the Roosevelt administration’s restrictive immigration policy concerns Jews, this document illustrates that the president was unwilling to help persecuted Christians in Germany. The argument made by Acting Secretary of State R. Walton Moore is similar to that made regarding European Jews, namely that the president should not show a preference for one group of refugees over others. The memo is from Press Secretary Stephen Early to the President’s private secretary Missy LeHand.
