Dov Gruner

(1912-1946)

GRUNER, DOV (1912–1946), Jew executed by the British in Palestine. Gruner was born in Kisvarda and was one of a group of "illegal" Betar immigrants who came to Ereẓ Israel in 1940, when he joined IẒL. A year later he enlisted as a volunteer in the British army in which he served for five years. On April 23, 1946 he participated in an attack by IẒL on the Ramat Gan police station, and was wounded and captured. The desperate attempts of the yishuv to save his life extended over a year and were still in progress, when suddenly he was hanged together with Drezner and his two companions.
