Meir Cohen

Meir Cohen is an Israeli politician who served as the Minister of Welfare and Social Services in the thirty-third Knesset.

Cohen was born on November 15, 1955 in Essaouria, Morocco, and immigrated to Israel with his family at age seven. He served as mayor of Dimona and is a member of the Israeli political party Yesh Atid.

Cohen earned his bachelor’s degree in history at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and taught school in Dimona following graduation.

He entered politics in 2003, when he joined Yisrael Beiteinu and ran for mayor of Dimona. He was elected with 42 percent of the vote, and reelected in 2008. While he was mayor, Dimona witnessed the opening of several factories, the city’s first mall was built, the unemployment rate dropped, cultural and youth centers were established, and Cohen led an initiative to lower the price of water.

Cohen served as a member of the Jewish Agency’s board of directors, as well. In October 2012, he joined Yesh Atid. He has served in the Knesset since 2013.
