David Libai

(1934 - )

David Libai is an Israeli jurist and politician who has served in the Israeli Cabinet.

Libai (born October 22, 1934) was born in Tel Aviv during the British Mandate era and studied law at the Hebrew University within the academic reserve program of the Israel Defense Forces. He later received his MA from the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Law in Tel Aviv University and his PhD from University of Chicago school of law.

Libai has served as the head of the Israel Bar Association, Deputy Attorney General, Director of the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Law in Tel Aviv University, spokesman for the Ministry of Justice, and Dean of Students at Tel-Aviv University. He has also been a member of the National Commission of Inquiry on Prison Conditions, Chairman of the Constitution Committee of the Labour Party, member of the Press Council, and Chairman of the Israel-Britain Parliamentary Friendship Association.

Libai was first elected as member of the Knesset in 1984 on the Alignment ticket and served on the Committee on Constitution, Law and Justice and the House Committee, while also chairing the State Audit Committee from 1984 to 1992. From 1991 to 1999 he served in Knesset representing the Labor Party.

From 1992 to 1996, Libai served as Minister of Justice and concurrently served as Minister of the Interior in 1995.

Re-elected to the Knesset in June 1996, Libai retired his seat a year later.
