Ilan Shalgi

(1945 - )

Ilan Shalgi was born in Israel in 1945. An attorney by profession, he holds an LLB and an MA in Law from Tel Aviv University, and completed his army service with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

Shalgi served as Chairman of the Friends of Youth Corps - Gadna (1987-1990), Chairman of the Directorate of the National Crude Oil Company (1993-1996), served as a member of the Tel Aviv District Disciplinary Court and National Court of Appeals of the Israeli Bar (1986-1995), as well as Chairman of the Shinui Secretariat (1996-1999, 2001-2003) and Chairman of Shinui's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee (1999-2001).

Elected to the 16th Knesset, he served since March 2003 as Chairman of the Knesset Education and Culture Committee, as well on the Committees for the Advancement of the Status of Women and of the Child.

Ilan Shalgi was appointed Minister of Science and Technology in July 2004.

He is married with three children.
