Wessel Freiherr von Freytag-Loringhoven was initially
fond of Hitler's National
Socialist program for Germany,
but later was shocked by the Night
of the Long Knives massacre.
He served with 4th Prussian Cavalry Regiment and then
with Intelligence Department 44 of the Abwehr under Admiral Canaris's close supervision.
In 1940,
Freytag-Loringhoven was promoted to Major and posted to the General
Staff of the 11th Army Corps. In 1943,
he was promoted to Colonel and posted to the Army High Command.
In July 1944,
Freytag-Loringhoven procured the detonator charge and explosives for Colonel von Stauffenberg's July 20 assassination
attempt against Hitler.
On July 23, 1944, he committed suicide at Mauerwald
camp, near the Wolf''s Lair.
