David Klein

(1935 - )

David Klein is an Israeli economist who served as governor of the Bank of Israel.

Klein was born in Tel Aviv in 1935 during the British Mandate over Palestine. He holds a B.A. in General History and Economics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Ph.D. in Economics from George Washington University.

From 1959 to 1966, Klein served in the Budget Department of Israel's Ministry of Finance, involved with oversight and planning duties as well as with the establishment of the town of Arad. From 1966 to 1972, he served in the fiscal affairs department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the United States.

After returning to Israel and working as an economist with the Tevel Institute of Policy Studies, Klein worked for Bank Leumi Le-Israel, serving in positions such as senior economist and head of the strategic planning division. From 1987 to 2000, Klein served with th Bank of Israel as a member of the Management, Head of Monetary and Foreign Exchange Supervision Departments. He was also Bank of Israel Representative on the Board of Directors of the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.

In 2000, Klein was appointed Governor of the Bank of Israel and served in this position until 2005. He is married with two children.
