Lyle Alzado

(1949 - 1992)

Lyle Alzado was a NFL football player who was known for his intimidating style of play. Born in Brooklyn, he was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the fourth round. In his career he played defensive line for the Broncos, Los Angles Raiders and the Cleveland Browns. As his play improved, he became universally recognized as a top defensive player. The Broncos’ record got better and better, until they were 12-2 and reached the Super Bowl (but lost to the Dallas Cowboys in 1977).

By any definition Alzado had an excellent career, nearing 1,000 tackles and recording 112-1/2 sacks and forcing 24 fumbles. He played in two Super Bowls and emerged a winner once (With the Raiders). However, his admitting the use of anabolic steroids from the time he was in college has tainted his career achievements. Alzado asserted that his steroid abuse directly led to his final illness, a brain tumor.
