Lebanon: Christians in Lebanon

(Updated April 2015)

The last official census in Lebanon took place in 1932, and concluded that the country had a population of 875,252. Of this population, 53% were counted as Christians. According to the most recent estimated statistics published by the World Fact Book, Christians currently constitute approximately 39% of the Lebanese population, and Muslims make up 59.7%. Conducting a census in Lebanon has not been possible since the early 20th century due to sectarian divisions within the country, so these population numbers are hotly debated and different organizations often report conflicting numbers. Registered voter lists are one of the only ways to get a semi-accurate population estimate. The percentage of the Lebanese population that identifies as Christian fell during the mid 1900's, but the population has been slowly recovering during the 2000's.
