Archaeological Discoveries: King David Era Seal Found at Temple Mount

(September 24, 2015)

An ancient seal from the era of King David was unearthed by a ten-year-old Russian boy named Matvei Tcepliaev while participating in the Temple Mount Sifting Project during late September 2015. Dr. Gabriel Barkay, director of the field project, stated that the find was “unprecedented,” and the first of it's kind in Jerusalem.

The seal dates back 3,000 years, to the 10th century B.C.E., and corresponds with the conquest of Jerusalem by King David. Barkay explained that, “the discovery of the seal testifies to the administrative activity which took place upon the Temple Mount during those times.” According to the co-founder and director of the organization, Zachi Dvira, as of September 2015 over 500,000 items discovered by the Temple Mount Sifting Project are waiting to be identified by the Israeli Antiquities Authority.
