Israel-Palestinian Peace Process: Israeli Withdrawal Gives Palestinians Control of Nearly Half of West Bank

(March 21, 2000)

On Tuesday, March 21, 2000, Israel redeployed from 6.1 percent of Judea and Samaria. Of this, 5.1 percent of Area B will become Area A and 1 percent of Area C will become Area A. This withdrawal was originally scheduled to take place on January 20, but was delayed because the Palestinians wanted different areas included in the redeployment, and, in particular, demanded control of areas bordering Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Authority now has full control of 18 percent of the West Bank and partial control of 21.7 percent. Negotiations will now begin for the third West Bank redeployment, scheduled to take place in June.
