Operation Protective Edge: Foreign AP Journalist Killed

Foreign AP Journalist Killed

Simone Camili was an Italian national on assignment for the Associated Press in the Gaza Strip when he was killed on August 13 2014. Three policemen and Camili's Palestinian translator were also killed and four other individuals sustained serious injuries when a leftover Hamas arms cache exploded in Beit Lahiya. He is the first foreign journalist to be killed during Operation Protective Edge. The police were attempting to neutralize a bomb in a weapons cache while Simone Camili was reporting, and the bomb unnexpectedly detonated.

Camili had worked for the Associated Press as a video journalist since 2005 and was stationed in Israel in 2006, where he frequently covered events in Gaza.  There are 33 other members of the Associated Press who have been killed reporting the news since the Associated Press was founded in 1846. Camili is survived by his long time partner and their 3-year-old daughter in Beirut, in addition to his father.
