US State Department Resettles Yemeni Jews

The US State Department disclosed that between July and October 2009, it had evacuated and helped to resettle nearly 60 Jews from Yemen in the United States. The clandestine operation to help some of Yemen's remaining Jews escape the country's rising anti-Semitic violence required families to apply for evacuation with the US Embassy in Sanaa and meet with US officials for interviews to establish a case for refugee status. Families were then flown to the US via Frankfurt.

The operation was supported by Jewish Federations of North America that raised $750,000 to help the rescue effort and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, tasked with the new immigrants' resettlement. The Yemeni refugees are being settle in Monsey, New York, a suburban community of ultraorthodox Jews.
