The Auschwitz Trials: First Auschwitz Trial

(November - December 1947)

This trial for crimes committed at Auschwitz - held in Kraków, Poland from November 24 to December 22, 1947 - convicted forty-one former staff of the concentration camp with crimes related to the atrocities committed there. Twenty-three of the defendants were sentenced to death, including Arthur Liebhenschel, ex-commandant, and Dr Maria Mandel, head of the women's camp. Those sentenced to death were hanged on January 28, 1948, except for two whose sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. The remainder were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment and one, Hans Munch, was aquitted and released.
