The Six-Day War: CIA's Optimism Following 1967 War

(July 14, 1967)

This document assessing the situation in the Middle East following the 1967 War is surprisingly optimistic. It foresees, for example, the resolution of the Palestinian refugee issue. King Hussein is deprecated and Palestinians are said to look forward to what Israel will do for them. The report also predicts Egyptian President Nasser will not survive long and that Israel can stand up to any Soviet threats. The CIA is unsure what Israel plans to do with the newly captured territories but says it is “Meshuga” over the Old City and “so its absorption probably cannot be reversed.”

The report also says that Israel needs and wants aid, but that UNRWA assistance is unacceptable because it is a “self-serving group with interests centered on perpetuating itself.”

The document also reports that “The Arabs and the Jews can live together.”
