Joe Choynski

(1868 - 1943)

Joe Choynski was a professional boxer who fought from 1888 to 1904. "Chrysanthemum Joe", as he was nicknamed, never weighed more than 176 pounds, but often fought heavyweights. He was considered exceptionally strong and a dangerous fighter. Choynski was never given an opportunity to fight for the heavyweight title, but enjoyed some stunning successes against famed heavyweights James J. Jeffries and Jack Johnson before they became champions. Choynski has been inducted into both the Jewish Sports and International Boxing Halls of Fame.
