*Meshi-Zahav agreed to give up the prize after accusations of sexual abuse (“ZAKA founder steps down, gives up Israel Prize as police probe sex abuse claims,” Times of Israel, March 12, 2021).
**In a controversial decision, Education Minister Yoav Gallant did not allow Goldreich to receive the prize with the other winners because of his support for the BDS movement. Israel’s Supreme Court gave Gallant 30 days to reach a decision about awarding the prize to Goldreich, allowing him to be awarded the prize later (“Israel Prize granted to 8 recipients in ceremony marred by political controversy,” Times of Israel, April 15, 2021). It was not until April 2022, however, that Goldreich received the prize after the Supreme Court rejected the petition of Gallant’s successor to deny him the award. Upon receiving the Prize, Goldreich announced he was donating the money to five organizations that are frequent critics of the Israeli government (“Controversial Israel Prize winner to donate grant money to human rights NGOs,” Times of Israel, April 14, 2022).
